Curriculum
What is unique about Darul Hikmah’s courses? How are they different from other existing courses of Islamic studies and weekend schools? What does one gain from studying this course?
‘Ulama Involvement:
Each class is taught by a traditionally-educated scholar of Islam. All our instructors are fluent in English and, having been raised in the West, are acutely aware of the environment that surrounds us. Additionally, they have each dedicated large periods of their life, in and out of the United States, to the study of the Islamic sciences. These well-grounded ʿulama, whose priority is the practical implementation of the Islamic principles, have not only designed and approved this course, but also teach and administer it.
Time Requirement:
Our Islamic studies curriculum has been designed to reduce the necessary in-class time requirement to a comfortable minimum. Without sacrificing the importance of teacher/student interaction, our course demands only four to five hours of in-class study a week. This allows for both high school and college students, as well as working adults, to participate and benefit from the Islamic studies course.
Range of Subjects:
The course material of this syllabus has been designed to include a wide variety of Islamic subjects, many of which are not offered commonly elsewhere. The curriculum includes classes in all of Islamic jurisprudence (fiqh), creed (‘aqidah), prophetic tradition (hadith), prophetic biography (sirah), correct Arabic pronunciation (tajwid), and exegesis (tafsir al-Qur’an).
Teacher-Student Interaction:
Without a doubt, the most important feature of a truly Islamic educational system is the sacred interaction between the student and his teacher. Our method of instruction, therefore, is not confined to dry monotonous lectures. Rather, it encourages a high level of student participation and welcomes question and debate.
Throughout the week, students are encouraged to keep in contact with their teachers and ask them questions through phone or email. Students are able to ask questions regarding class material as well as general spiritual/guidance questions. Teachers monitor the progress of students’ personal, moral, and spiritual development, helping them to play a responsible and productive role in society.
Leadership Skills:
One of the primary goals of our Islamic studies course is to equip every student who participates in the course with the necessary tools to become a future community leader. Students are given access to materials and resources that aid them in delivering khutbahs, giving speeches, conducting halaqahs, propagating the faith, etc.
Visiting Scholars:
From time to time, Darul Hikmah invites scholars, both locally and from around the world, to visit the program and benefit the students with their lectures. Students get an opportunity to discuss important issues and interact with these fountains of knowledge on a very personal basis.
